The latest trend toward kids window hardware is to install bars that are designed to keep kids inside from falling out the window. Aluminum or steel bars that are spaced no farther than 4 inches apart and installed on the inside of the window frame will effectively keep your child from leaving the house through the window. The major drawback to this window hardware option is that, while it will protect your child in that room, it is not designed to keep burglars out. It is also necessary, for fire or emergency evacuation that at least one window in the room be free of bars, which rather defeats the purpose.
Dual Purpose Kids Window Hardware
Security bars on the outside of the window will serve to keep the child from falling out and keep unwanted guests from coming in. Most security bar systems are designed with some kind of quick release mechanism that can only be activated from the inside in case of emergency. For people who do not want bars on their windows, installing a key-locked security sash lock on all your double-hung windows is still one of the most effective deterrents for escaping kids, or tempted burglars.
Keeping your child safe from dangers inside and outside the house is every parent’s responsibility. It is up to you just how heavy the hardware you need to install for your family to be safe.
