Resume Tips

Stuck in a job slump? It is never too late to look for something that better satisfies your job needs. Here are some pointers in creating an effective resume and cover letter. In today's competitive job market, a well-written resume and cover letter is an essential compenent to getting your foot in the door and on your way to landing the perfect position.

Before you write your resume, take time to do a self-assessment, outline your skills and abilities as well as your work experience and extracurricular activities. This will make it easier to put down your qualities and training on paper. Using a resume-wizard which is offered through most basic word -processing programs are usually very helpful and easy to use. All your contact information should go at the top of your resume. Next you should include an objective telling potential employers the sort of work you're hoping to do. Be specific about the type of job you want and tailor your objective to each employer and job you seek. Mention education and any academic awards or honors recieved then proceed to including work experience. It's beneficial to include the duties that each job entailed, as it will give the employer a better idea of your skills. You can also give references if requested, nothing is better than a glowing letter from a past employer regarding your excellent work ethic.

Here are some technical tips:

  • Use white or off-white paper.
  • Use 8-1/2- x 11-inch paper.
  • Print on one side of the paper.
  • Use a font size of 10 to 14 points.
  • Use a standard fontface, no decorative types.
  • Choose one typeface and stick to it.
  • Avoid italics, script, and underlined words.
  • Do not use horizontal or vertical lines, graphics, or shading or any sort of clipart.
