DIY Patio Paving

Patio paving involves creating a hard surface for an outdoor area. The materials desired to create the surface can determine how difficult or easy the job is to handle overall. In most cases, do-it-yourselfers can readily take on this type task. It will require following a careful, multi-step process.

Step 1 – Pick Patio Paving Materials

This singular step will define how easy or complicated all the others will be. The material selected for patio paving can have a very big impact on the intensity of the job. Some common materials to consider for paving a patio include:

  • Paving stones, which are generally easy to install;
  • Concrete, which can be the most involved;
  • Asphalt, which may require a contractor.

Step 2 – Prepare the Area

Regardless of the type of patio paving material selected, the area will need initial preparation. This is a job a do-it-yourselfer can handle. To enjoy the cleanest possible installation, it is imperative to:

  • Remove obstructions from the area – All grass and plant materials should be removed from the area set aside for patio paving. If an existing patio is in place, it should be broken up and removed.
  • Level the surface – The ground on which the patio paving will be placed must be leveled prior to the installation of any materials. It is also a good idea to dig down at least six inches (up to ten in the case of asphalt) to create a form for the materials.
  • Gravel installation – If asphalt will be used as the patio paving, a gravel layer will need to be laid prior to pouring the materials.

Step 3 – Additional Patio Paving Preparation

If concrete is the material of choice, an additional step will be necessary. Forms must be created to hold the liquid material as it is poured. Forms are made from lumber and wire meshing. They should be designed to hold the appearance of the desired end product.

Step 4 – Preparing And Setting The Materials

What will happen with this step depends on the material in question:

  • Stones – These should be laid into the prepared area to conform with the desired design. Once completed, dirt or grout should be used to seal spaces between the stones.
  • Concrete – This should be mixed, poured and treated as per manufacturer specifications. Do pour, tamp and level only one section at a time.
  • Asphalt – Since hot-mix asphalt can be difficult to work with, it is often recommended that a professional pour this material.

Patio paving is a rewarding job that can often be handled by a do-it-yourselfer. With a little work, a backyard space can be turned into a functional area for barbecues and more.
