Lacquer is a clear or colored varnish that dries as the solvent evaporates. In many cases it is used as a curing process. The lacquer, when dried, creates a hard and very durable finish that will protect the material underneath.
You can find lacquer from a matte finish all the way to a high gloss. Lacquers, as well as shellac are both used as a protection coating for furniture and other items.
Lacquer Versus Shellac
Shellac is used in the same manner as lacquer for protection of the wood and other materials. Lacquer is actually more durable than shellac and can be easier to use, as well as is offered in many different sheen levels.
Always ensure that if you are using lacquer on wood or anything else that the area is completely clean and free of debris. If there is dust or other particles on the area to have lacquer applied you will have a bumpy surface instead of the smooth silk like surface the lacquer should create.
