Grey Water Tank Replacement Guide

Using a grey water tank can save money in watering your plants and lawns. However, to ensure proper watering, the tank should be replaced as necessary. If you need to replace your grey water tank, read the following information to get you started.

Closing off the System

Be sure you have effective shutoffs to stop the grey water flow from the house while you are replacing the tank. If the system was professionally installed, there may be a provision for using the standard sewer system when needed and for shutting off the water to the tank. In a “home grown” system, these provisions may not exist, and you may need to create them yourself.

Disposal

Make sure you have a place to dispose of the old water tank. The local dump may have special regulations about accepting the tank since it was used for grey water. There are particular guidelines about mold and bacteria. You can find this information on-line at your city's website or by calling your city's dump directly.

Consider the Latest Technologies

New systems reclaim grey water to use for flushing toilets, or provide “settling tanks” to remove sediment and potentially harmful substances before using the water. Other systems collect not only water from appliances such as washers and dishwashers, but sink water and rain water as well, making them even more efficient. So, when you replace your tank, you may want to invest in these technologies to make watering your garden easier and with less maintenance needed in the future. If you do not have the option for this kind of investment, you can find another grey water tank at your local hardware store to replace the one you recently discarded.
