Getting a Grip on Faucet Handle Repair

Learn to do your own faucet handle repair to stop annoying trips and wasted water. A leaky faucet can not only raise your monthly water bill, but it can damage your sink basin, calling for unnecessary replacement.

Go the local hardware store or home improvement store and pick up some ordinary sink washers. Take the old ones with you to be sure you get ones that fit your specific appliance. With regular wear and tear, most washers need to be replaced. With a pair of pliers and some new washers, it's a breeze to repair your faucet handles.

  1. Turn off the water supply, either at the main or simply the tap. Most water supplies are located inside and under the cabinet. Hot water systems can usually be found on the tap near the hot water tank. Most hot water tanks tend to be either in the garage or in the basement of a home.
  2. Full open the tap that needs fixing.
  3. Unscrew the tap head and lift the top of the tap.
  4. Toss out the old, worn washer and replace it. For a standard sink, the new washer should fit right inside.
  5. Place the tap back on and tighten, but not too tight because the pressure could damage the washers.
  6. Turn the water supply back on. When the water flows, turn the tap off.
  7. Check for any unnecessary drips or leaks. The fixed tap should be void of either.
  8. Be sure to turn the faucet on and off more than once before you complete the task.
