Gardening Gift Bouquet

by Dave Donovan

A gardening gift bouquet is a perfect gift for the person buying their first home. It also works extremely well for Mother’s Day, Birthdays, as a kind gesture to a neighbor or even as a gift for you. It’s a great way to usher in the spring planting season and with some new tools and gardening items, who wouldn’t get excited at the thought of blooming flowers or growing vegetables?

As with most gift bouquets, it is important to know the person you’re giving it to. By that, I mean, does the person like flowers or are they more of a vegetable garden person? Do they have a love for a particular thing, like roses? The more you know about them, the better and more personal your gardening gift bouquet will be.

The wonderful thing about a gardening gift bouquet is, every time that person sees the flowers or eats a tomato from their garden, they’ll think of you. Besides that, to make things easy on you, everything can be picked up in one quick stop at your local gardening/hardware superstore!

Now, let’s take a look at some items you can include in your gardening gift bouquet.

First off, you will need something to hold all the items. You can choose a shiny metal pail, a large plastic bucket or for the new homeowner, you may splurge and use a wheel barrel. Either way, it has to be able to hold everything you plan to put in it. You may even want to pick up all the individual items first and then find a holder for them last to make sure everything fits nicely.

Next, you’ll need to pick up some basic gardening tools. These will include:

  • A Hand-Held Gardening Trowel
  • A Hand-Held Gardening Cultivator
  • A Hand-Held Gardening Transplanter
  • A Hand-Held Weeder
  • Pruning Shears or Garden Scissors
  • An Adjustable Bulb Planter (If you plan in supplying bulbs)
  • 2 pairs of Gardening Gloves

Now that you have the tools chosen, you have to decide what types of plants to give. If it’s early enough in the season, seeds work great because you can get an entire garden of vegetables with very little money. You can also buy everything plenty of time in advance since you’re not dealing with live plants. Of course, providing a plant that is already growing is instant gratification and it will harvest or bloom much more quickly. If you’re planning on giving live plants, purchase them right before giving the bouquet so they don’t dry out on you.

If you’re not a gardener yourself, do a little research and find out what types of plants grow best in your area of the country. Just because the gardening center sells a certain flower doesn’t mean it will automatically grow in your neck of the woods. The last thing you want to do is give a plant as a gift that won’t grow. It wastes both their time and your money. So, just use a quick internet search and you won’t have a problem.

Some other items you may want to include in your gardening gift bouquet include:

  • A Small Box of Fertilizer (like Miracle-Gro)
  • A Watering Can
  • A Quality Hose Nozzle
  • A Couple of Plastic Planting Pots
  • A Small Bag of Potting Soil
  • A Can of Insect Repellant (for the human, not the plants!)
  • Sun Tan Lotion
  • A Padded Knee Protector
  • A Gardening Hat or Visor
  • A Gardening Apron

You can literally add whatever you want to the gardening gift bouquet. Make it as simple as you want, or include everything but the lawn mower. Get creative! For a best friend, you can plan a gardening party, so you can help them plant their gifts. For a mother, you can include a hand-made coupon allowing for “One Free Garden Weeding Credit.”

Your gardening gift bouquet will be a completely unique gift that the recipient will truly appreciate and cherish. Remember, the gardening tools you provide will be used for many planting seasons and if you include a perennial plant, it will come back season after season, a yearly reminder of your generosity.
