Fixing a Stuck Shower Faucet Diverter

A stuck shower faucet diverter is evident if you attempt to switch the water from the main faucet to the shower head and nothing occurs. Fortunately, this is an easily fixed problem and can be performed using the following options.

Option 1-Gently Tap the Handle

Whether the diverter is a push in type or one that pulls up on the bath faucet, gently tapping the top of the handle might dislodge any buildup that is keeping it from working. If you use this option and the problem continues, you may need to use the other options listed below which involve a bit more effort.

Option 2-Pull Out With Pliers

There are two ways to perform this repair:

  1. Pull Up Faucet - Gently work the handle with the pliers, pulling it out a little at a time. Once you have retrieved it, clean it thoroughly and then place it back carefully.
  2. Push In Faucet  - Look for the screw under the faucet spout and unscrew it, enabling you to turn faucet upside down. Use needle nose pliers to pry the black rubber washer loose. Check for any debris and remove it as necessary.

Option 3-Replace If Cracked or Broken

If the shower faucet diverter is stuck because the washers are old and have broken or the plastic valve diverter inside the pipe has broken, then it is time to replace the faucet itself. The diverter is not an overly expensive mechanism to buy and replacing it may be easier than attempting to fix it.
