Cupboard Door Knobs Installation: Start To Finish

Now that you've got your cabinets hung with the doors and drawers installed, make sure to finish the job properly and follow these instructions for cupboard door knobs installation.

Regardless of what style door knobs you choose, even the untrained eye can spot a crooked or off center knob. Taking the time to manufacture a jig will pay off in the long run.

Material List

2x2 feet 3/4 inch plywood

circular or miter saw

2 small clamps

drill

1/8 inch drill bit

screwdriver

Procedure

  1. Cabinet door knobs should be equidistant horizontally and vertically from the bottom corner of the functioning side of the door. Drawer knobs should be centered on the drawer.
  2. For cabinet doors: Using 3/4 inch plywood, cut a 6x6 inch right triangle. Measure in and up 1 3/4 inch and drill a 1/8 inch hole through the plywood. Clamp your jig flush with the bottom and edge of the functioning side of the door. Drill through your pilot hole completely through the cabinet door. Repeat for all doors.
  3. For cabinet drawers: Measure the width and height of the drawers and find the center. Cut a piece of 3/4 inch plywood the exact width of the drawer and half the height PLUS 1 inch. Drill a 1/8 inch hole through the center of your plywood jig, 1 inch up from the bottom. Clamp the jig against the drawer, flush left to right and with the top of the drawer. Drill through your pilot hole completely through the cabinet drawer.
  4. Now you have precise knob holes on your drawers and doors. Using a screwdriver and NOT A DRILL (drilling can cause splitting of the wood and stripping of the hardware) install screws through the inside of doors and drawers. Match screws with knob hardware.
  5. Holding the hardware steady, tighten the interior screws until knobs are tight.
