Unless you live in the Arctic, it's likely your chimney doesn't see much action during the summer. But when fall approaches, it's a good time to clean out the flue.
Start by noting the dimensions and shape (round or square) of your flue as well as its height. Visit a hardware store and purchase chimney brushes and a set of extension handles that allows you to clean the full length of the chimney.
If you don't already have one get a ladder to get you up on your roof. Before you start cleaning take these key precautions: Cover the interior fireplace opening with thick plastic sheeting.
Use another piece of sheeting and cover the chimney top to prevent downdrafts -- be sure to cut a slit in this piece for the brush and handle. Now you're ready to start brushing the chimney clean. When you're done, carefully remove the plastic sheeting and clean up all the soot.
