DIY Block Paving

Block paving involves the installation of blocks, bricks or special paving stones to create a path, patio or driveway. This project is one that will require careful thought, planning and some work to pull off. The multi-step process is one that most do-it-yourselfers can easily handle.

Step 1 – Select the Materials for Block Paving

Block paving can involve the use of a variety of materials. Selecting the block desired, prior to drawing a design, can make all the other steps flow much more easily. Options for block paving include:

• Preformed concrete blocks;
• Brick pavers;
• Uniform stones.

Step 2 – Draw the Design for Block Paving

Before buying the blocks, it is essential to know how many are needed. To arrive at the right number it is important to draw out a plan for the job. To do this:

• Consider the desired shape and design of the project;
• Take complete measurements,

Step 3 – Secure the Materials

Once the exact dimensions are determined, it is time to collect the materials for the job. The items needed are likely to include:

• The block paving materials;
• A shovel
• A leveling device for the prepared ground;
• Grouting material or mortar if bricks or blocks will be used.

Step 4 – Prepare the Area for Block Paving

Before attempting to lay block paving, it is important to prepare the area. To do so:

• Remove all plant materials from the staked out swath of land;
• Dig down deep enough to inset the block paving;
• Level the land for placement of the block paving.

Step 5 – Lay the Block Paving

Place the blocks into the prepared area by setting them into the desired design. In the case of stones, place the pavers as close together as possible.
It may be necessary to cut some blocks to fit properly.
For bricks and block, mortar or grout can be used to seal the spaces. Earth can be used to seal spaces in between stones if that is the desired look.

Step 6 – Add Finishing Touches

Allow grout or mortar to properly dry before attempting to walk on the area that has undergone block paving. If stones are used, do make sure they are securely set before putting them into use.
Block paving is one of the easiest forms of paving for a do-it-yourself. This look is ideal for garden paths, front walkways and even patios and porches.
