4 Basic Fireplace Tools You Need

When shopping for fireplace tools, the choices can be daunting. You will find pokers, tongs, brushes, shovels, screens, and grates, just to name a few. Nevertheless, to maintain a safe and beautiful fireplace there are only a few tools that you really need.

1. The Fireplace Tool Set
A basic fireplace tool set will include a poker, tongs, shovel, and brush. These are generally available in chrome, steel, brass or iron. The steel and iron sets tend to be the more popular choices since they require very little upkeep. You will not have to clean these as often to maintain the appearance. Since this will sit directly at the hearth, make sure you find a set that will match the over all décor of the fireplace itself.

2. The Fireplace Screen
A screen is an important tool to have for safety reasons.  Without a screen, you run a risk of starting a fire outside the fireplace. If you have an electric fireplace then this will not be necessary. The screen is designed to keep ashes and sparks from leaving the actual fireplace. Screens are also available in a variety of designs and metal choices.

3. Fireplace Grate or Andiron

The fireplace grate is a more common tool than the andiron, although the choice is ultimately yours. The grate is where you will place the logs in the fire. They are curved slightly back to allow the logs to shift and fall in to place as the center log burns away. Placing kindling under the grate will help to keep the air flowing through the fire. The andiron is a more decorative version of the grate. It’s usually basket shaped with legs that extend backwards to support logs on the fire. Some andirons are designed to use with a grate as well.

4. Log Basket
If you are using a wood burning fireplace, then a log basket or rack is a great tool to have. Again, this one will be unnecessary for an electric fireplace, unless you want to have a few logs for decorative purposes. While many people will just set the logs on the hearth, the basket will prevent the logs from tipping over. The basket or rack will reduce the mess that the unburned logs can create. These are again available in a variety of styles and metal choices.

While these are the basic fireplace tools needed to maintain a safe and comfortable fire, there are a few others that you may want to invest in. A fire-back is a great idea for those who are energy conscious. It’s designed to help retain the heat created by the fire and circulate it back in to the room.

During the summer months you may want to think about a fireplace candelabra. These are places directly in the firebox and are designed to hold several pillar candles. It creates a beautiful ambience without the heat.

Fireplace tools range from very inexpensive to very high end. Regardless of your budget you should be able to find the tools that are practical and affordable for you with just a little research.
