Project Summary

We purchased our 1950's home with the intent of remodeling the kitchen early on. It ONLY took us 8 years to finally tackle the project. We started on January 18th and gutted the kitchen to the studs, replacing the sheetrock and sub-flooring. We paid someone to come in and complete the drywall and texture, but the rest was completed by us, with the help of family or friends when available.

Day 1

We started by removing the old cabinets. Simple enough.

Demolition complete

It took us two days to remove all the sheetrock and old plywood flooring. What a mess! We discovered there was no insulation in the walls. There is now. It will be the warmest room in the house.

Concerns

We were worried about the flooring, as there had been a significant leak years back. We thought we would have to replace the planking. Lucky for us, all was good. We pulled the old plywood up and put down new.

I have walls again!

Three days into the project and the sheetrock is up. At this point, we decided to leave the taping, mudding and texture to a professional and hired an aquaintance to finish up here. His initial plan was to hang the cabinets and have someone come in when available. What a mess trying to keep the stuff off the new cabinets. Fortunately, we were able to get they guy out the next evening to start work. So much easier than trying to NOT make a mess.

Painting is complete. My part is done. The rest is up to him. He has changed his mind a couple of times about whether or not to tile before or after the cabinets are installed.
